Farmed insect protein research

The demand for sustainable and alternative protein sources has spurred the development of the farmed insect protein industry. With insect protein viewed as a potential solution to address global food security issues, reduce environmental impact, and provide a rich source of nutrients the promise of this alternative is extremely exciting.

In particular, insects’ ability to consume and thrive on a wide range of organic substrates offers unique opportunities for bioconversion (and for potentially lower cost production) and yet it also brings particular challenges that need understanding.

Rationale

The rapid growth of the farmed insect protein industry necessitates robust food production frameworks to ensure the health and well-being of consumers. Current regulations and research surrounding the safety of insect production and consumption are still in their infancy, especially compared to traditional protein sources.

To safeguard public health, it is imperative that the industry proactively addresses food safety challenges, including pathogen control, contamination risks, and the establishment of standardised production processes, while at the same time, making as much use as possible of substrates and methods that will reduce production costs and optimise the environmental impact.

We are seeking research proposals that directly address these challenges and ensure the long-term viability of insect-based foods in the domestic and global market.
